Alonso, Hamilton, Ricciardo | Hungarian Grand Prix
Everyone on the podium today deserved their results.
Ricciardo charged to the lead at the end of the race like he did in Canada, displaying amazing racecraft to make aggressive passes on a track that is supposedly awful for overtaking and won going away, and was miles ahead of his four-time champion teammate. To think, he was loaned out to the worst team in F1 to start his career, labored through two up/down seasons at Toro Rosso, had to convince Red Bull he was better than Kimi Raikkonen or Jean-Eric Vergne when a vacancy opened up next to Vettel. Ted Kravitz said he’d only outqualify Vettel once all year. He’s done it 7 times. I thought he would fall short of winning a race at all this year. Now he has two.
Alonso drove the last 30+ laps on tyres not meant to do 30+ laps, and only conceded the lead at the bitter end, held off Hamilton and Rosberg in a far superior car for the remaining 3 laps on worn, dead tyres - you’re seeing the same genius in him that you heard in folk tales about Gilles Villeneuve, the same grit and drive you saw in Senna’s last year at McLaren or Schumacher’s first three seasons at Ferrari. You’re seeing the best driver, my favorite driver yes, but arguably the most complete driver, in his prime, carrying a team that quite frankly does not deserve his talents much longer.
And Lewis Hamilton. Only got 3 points back from Rosberg in the overall picture. Didn’t matter. Starting on pitlane and ended up on the podium. After he spun the car off on lap 1 and had to hold off his teammate on new, soft tyres. Just like he did in Bahrain. Continuing the best intra-team title fight since Alonso vs Hamilton, maybe even since Senna vs Prost.
Formula 1 isn’t boring.
